Narrabeen Sports High School Music

Narrabeen Sports High School's music program provides opportunities for all year 7 and 8 students to gain individual and group musical skills. There is a strong focus across such areas as performance, composition, musicology and listening in a variety of contexts. Students in years 7 and 8 explore these concepts through the use of keyboards, guitars and other musical instruments. Guitar lessons are available during school hours and can be arranged through the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) head teacher.

Those students wishing to further their musical education can choose music as an elective subject in years 9 and 10, and as an HSC subject in years 11 and 12. In these courses, students develop their performance skills through instrumental training, study and application of musical concepts, and by being involved in school ensembles and musical concerts.

Throughout the year opportunities arise for students to perform at school based and community performances. These events provide students with an avenue to learn from their peers, perform different styles of music and develop their self-confidence.

Additional to the music curriculum, Narrabeen Sports High School offers a variety of extra-curricular musical activities, including:
• Musicale Concert (annual event)
• School Musical – Oliver in 2016
• Musical Incursions and Workshops
• PCS Music Festival
• Rock Bands (lunchtime rehearsals arranged with the music teachers)
• School band

Participating in extra-curricular musical activities teaches students about discipline, commitment and team work. It's a great way to build relationships with students in other years and become part of the Narrabeen Sports High School community.

Concert Band

Narrabeen Sports High Schools Concert Band was established in 2015 and is a developing program, aiming to meet the needs of current and new students to the school. It caters for a range of abilities.

It aims to promote the pursuit of musical excellence through collaborative, engaging and challenging rehearsals and performances. Being part of an ensemble offers many benefits including a sense of belonging, confidence building and peer support.
The band is open to students playing a wide variety of instruments, including traditional and non-traditional band instruments. Instrument hire is available through the school. For more information contact the band conductor.

The band works in collaboration with both drama and dance students towards a biannual musical. 2016 sees Lionel Bart's Oliver come to Narrabeen. The band invites students from feeder primary schools to join the musical, working alongside high school students to create a combined musical pit orchestra.
The concert band meets every Monday morning from 7:30-8:30am with additional rehearsal times in the lead up to a school musical.
For further information please contact the Concert Band Conductor, Belinda Smith or on (02) 9913 7820.
