Special Religious Education

Under the Education Act 1990 Section 32,  there is a legislative requirement that "In every government school, time is to be allowed for the religious education of children of any religious persuasion". In accordance with this section of the Act our school provides Special Religious Education.

Special Religious Education (SRE) benefits students by allowing learners to analyse their own values, better understand themselves and others, develop a knowledge of issues facing the community including ethical and moral aspects whilst exploring meaningful questions about what is important and valuable in life.

Volunteers who are trained by Approved Providers teach these classes. All volunteers have had a Police Record check and have signed a Prohibited Employment Declaration.

At any time, parents  have the right to change their child's SRE nomination or withdraw them from special religious education lessons.  An exemption form is available outside the Deputy Principal's office.

Students who do not attend SRE classes will complete private study under the supervision of a teacher or be engaged in another program as planned by the school. No student will be academically advantaged or disadvantaged by engaging in SRE.

St Faith's Anglican Church and Narrabeen Baptist Church are recognised by the Department of Education as approved providers of religious education. A voluntary lunchtime group exists to give Christian students the opportunity to grow in their understanding of Christianity, and to allow other students who may be interested in knowing more about Christianity, the chance to explore their questions in an informal setting.

Narrabeen Sports High, St Faith's Anglican Church and Narrabeen Baptist Church take seriously the need for parents to be fully informed concerning the planned discussions in this group, therefore written permission is required before students can attend.
